Recent Advances in the Synthesis and Analysis of Polyamide 6 and Products therefrom: From Polymerization Chemistry of εcaprolactam to Thermoplastic Resin Transfer Moulding (t-rtm)

Image
JUNIPER PUBLISHERS-   ACADEMIC JOURNAL OF POLYMER SCIENCE Abstract Significant research and developments are taking place in the field of synthetic polyamides (Nylons). One of the most investigated members of this family of polymers is poly (ε-caprolactam) (PCL, Polyamide 6, PA6, Nylon 6). Herein, a brief overview will be presented on the major recent advancements in the anionic ringopening polymerization (AROP) of ε-caprolactam (CL) by the initiating combinations of metal lactamates and carbamoylcaprolactams and by some other initiating systems, e.g. protected N-heterocyclic carbenes , NaHMDI and σ-borane-barium complexes. The in situ polymerization of CL in the presence of additives, such as flame retardants, reinforcing agents and fillers, is also discussed. Examples are presented on the determination of the molecular weight distributions (MWD) and average...

Modified Cellulose-Based Edible Polymer Coating: An Investigation of Castor Oil Concentration for Application in Apple Preservation

Image
JUNIPER PUBLISHERS-   ACADEMIC JOURNAL OF POLYMER SCIENCE Abstract The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effect of adding various concentrations of castor oil (2% and 4% v/v) on the properties of edible films based on carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC). Moisture content, water solubility, tensile strength, elongation at break, elastic modulus, water vapor permeability, optical and thermal properties and antioxidant activity of the films were examined. The results demonstrated that the presence of castor oil led to a decrease in moisture content, water solubility and mechanical strength of the films. The film containing 4% of oil showed the highest water vapor permeability. The optical properties measurement represented that all of the samples were transparent. By the addition of castor oil, the antioxidant activity of the films improved largely. Thermal properties of the samples had also been investigated and it was determined that the effect of castor oil on the me...

Short Review on the Conducting Polymer based Nanocomposites for Gas Sensing Applications

JUNIPER PUBLISHERS-   ACADEMIC JOURNAL OF POLYMER SCIENCE Abstract In the rapidly developing world a great concern regarding the protection and wellbeing of living beings and environment has led to the necessity for development of accurate monitoring processes through accurate and sensitive sensors. For these sensor applications conducting polymers nanocomposites have been widely used. In this article we will discuss about the conducting polymers, their mechanism of conduction, the sensing mechanism and different types of conducting polymers-based gas sensors. The prospects of conducting polymers-based gas sensor nanocomposites are also discussed in this article. A New Composition of High Heat General Purpose Polystyrene (High Heat GPPS) Resin

Image
JUNIPER PUBLISHERS-   ACADEMIC JOURNAL OF POLYMER SCIENCE Abstract A new composition of high heat general-purpose polystyrene (High heat GPPS) resin synthesis is discussed. The new composition of resin involves addition of cross-linker/comonomer in very low concentration during synthesis process. Commercially available vinyl cross-linkers like divinylbenzene (DVB), Ethylene dimethacrylate (EDM), Tricycle (5.2.1.02,6) decanedimethanol diacrylate (TDDDA), Dicyclopentadiene (DCPD) and vinyl comonomer like maleic anhydride, α-methylstyrene have been evaluated via bulk polymerization method. DVB showed enhancement in the heat distortion temperature (HDT), vicat softening temperature (VST) & melt flow index (MFI) compared to the benchmark grade of GPPS, whereas other mechanical and impact properties remained same or better than benchmark grade under identical methods of measurement. Keywords:  Divinylbenzene; Cross-linked; Branching; Polymerization; He...
